GREEN SQUARES AND SECRET GARDENS

Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th August 2014
Location
Clifton Village
Price

To be able to plan a visit in advance and start at any garden, tickets can be bought in advance from GSSG, 11 Goldney Avenue, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 4RATickets and information will be sent by post, so please include your address.

OR

On 16th & 17th August from 10.30 outside the Arch House Deli .   The cost is £3.00 per person (free entry for those under 16).

Description

In 1998 a group in London successfully opened 40 communal gardens and squares to the public over one weekend.  It has been so successful that there are now over 220  London gardens and the scheme has spread to Europe.  [See www.opensquares.org] .   Clifton is the first place in England to join in.  It is a challenge, but what other town or city has 38 communal gardens within one square mile?   As the local amenity society for Bristol 8, Clifton and Hotwells Improvement Society agreed to try to start this up.

This year it will be a fairly small event and not all communal gardens were approached because we need to keep up interest for future years.  We plan for it to be an enjoyable, interesting and fun day for all age groups and to show people what Clifton has to offer as they walk from garden to garden. This year it is centred on Victoria Square so it is a really Clifton Village event
With the purchase of a £3.00  ticket comes a booklet describing the gardens, a tree trail in Victoria Square,  a map with the gardens and points of interest to look at whilst walking round and the times of  talks about the history of Victoria Square, The Mall Gardens and St Andrew’s Churchyard

This is also an opportunity for the gardens to raise money by having stalls or putting on an entertainment.   Once expenses have been taken out, money from the sale of tickets is shared between the participating gardens.

From 15th July information about when the gardens will be open and any changes will be on the CHIS website and on the notice board at the Library in Princess Victoria Street

Mayhem ensues as brother is taken for brother in a riotous train of misunderstandings, seduction, and pursuit.

The Festival Players perform with an all-male company of skilled professional actors and invite you to share in this colourful romp; join them in a fantastic setting, for summer fun for the whole family.
Gates open from 6.00pm (Upper Lawn only) for picnics; bring your own food, drinks, seating, rugs etc.  Play starts at 7:30pm on the Lower Lawn.
Wheel chair access is available from the York Gardens entrance (BS8 4LN).  Portable accessible toilets will also be available. Bus Nos. 8 or 9 to Clifton Village stop on nearby Regent Street.

MONKEY CHUCKLE

Date

Sun 2 March 2014 @ 830pm

Location The Coronation Tap
Price £4
Description Over the last few years Monkey Chuckle have performed their explosive brand of funk to thousands of people across the UK, from the local pubs and clubs of their home town of Bristol to the stages of some of the best festivals. Whether performing at Craig Charles' Funk and Soul Show, or alongside the likes of The Apples and The Haggis Horns, this deep-groovin' outfit always gets people up on their feet.

The band emerged on the live music scene by putting their own takes on tunes by the likes of the JBs, Deodato & Kool and The Gang. They soon began to produce their own material and forged their distinctive brass heavy funk sound, combining hip-hop, afro and latin styles where the focus is always on a highly danceable groove.

Up front the band is led by a dynamic, fleet footed three-piece brass section (whose credits include Jools Holland Big Band, The Heavy & Aztec Camera to name a few) and backed up by a super tight rhythm section.

Their 2012 success with the debut EP release'In The Hotbox' will be followed in 2014 with a new EP/Album as their songlist grows.

The band have been joined in 2014 by the amazing young drummer Tom Gilkes and Steve Hacking on tenor sax.
